Advice on getting my Handyman business started

Hi All,

I am new here and looking for any advice and/or guidance that will help me get my business off the ground.

I used to be a plasterer many years ago and over the years have undertaken many small building work (bathrooms, tiling, fencing, plastering, brickwork etc...) for friends, family and the odd cash job to supplement my IT career.

I am now lucky enough to be semi-retired but to keep busy I have setup as a Sole Trader so that I can work maybe 3 days a week (sometimes more) to create some additional income, prevent boredom and because I live DIY type jobs !

My question is 'other than word of mouth' how do you guys that run a business generate your customers?......there are sites like 'My Job Quote' where people post jobs online that looks interesting ..... just wondered what you find has worked for you?

I am total newbie to running a small business so any ideas or insights would be appreciated !

When I first started doing small DIY jobs on the side, I found that putting yourself out there locally works best. Listing services online helps, but showing up in person, leaving flyers at community boards, or joining local groups really brings trust. Thinking of it like a Recreational locksmith—someone learning for fun but gradually building skill and credibility—helps.
